Heathen

This Sunday at the Met, just around church-goin' time, will be a movie on the Popol Vuh and Mayan Creation myths. I suppose St. John the Divine is closer to my house, but at the end of the day, I know where I stand. And that is, firmly on the side of the pyramids.

Let me know if you want to come too, there's going to be a lecture later on blood sacrifice. (This is all in conjunction with the exhibit, Treasures of the Sacred Maya Kings, which is very good.)

Show Jesus You Care

Yet another reminder that the Museum of Biblical Art, at which I work and to which I am devoted, is previewing its latest exhibit (The Word on the Street: The Photographs of Larry Racioppo) tomorrow night (Wednesday) from 6 to 8pm. 61st and Broadway. Big glass thingy. I have a new dress. Let me know you're coming.

Big Apple Barbecue!

If this were an audiofile, I would be speaking in my best southern accent. As is, pretend.

Tomorrow, Saturday, is the first major FUNgenda event of the summer: The Big Apple Barbecue Block Party at Madison Square Park. Barbecue masters from all over the country grill for your dining pleasure, and admission is free (food less so). It will be AWESOME. I am counting the hours until my face is covered in vinegar and pieces of hog. Delightful!!!

Please join me there, weather permitting! Early too, barbecue is a church to me.

FUNgestions II

Reader (but not closely) Dave suggests we try Floyd, a Brooklyn bar with an indoor Bocce Ball lawn and cheap beer. Although those of us heading to Brian's show at 11pm will be unable to make the trek tonight, I think it sounds like the perfect destination for a lazy Saturday. I will plan something laterish.

Description:
Floyd is located at 131 Atlantic Ave. between Henry and Clinton streets in Brooklyn Heights.

"Nearby, on a formerly empty stretch of Atlantic Avenue, the afternoon crawl took me to Floyd, a low-key pub decorated in a sort of Victorian cast-off meets decaying library theme that may be able to claim the unusual distinction of housing Brooklyn's only indoor lawn-bowling court. 'Bocce,' an Italian lawn bowling game played since at least 5000 B.C. and enjoyed enthusiastically by historical figures ranging from the Ancient Greek physician Hippocrates to Sir Francis Drake, according to the American Bocce Ball Association, is enjoying a mini-resurgence among the drinking crowd at Floyd.

The bocce court takes up nearly half the bar and it is undeniably fun to throw back a few cans of cheap beer (including $3 cans of Old Milwaukee, and the "Crap-a-copia," a rotating selection of six cans of swill served in a bucket of ice for 12 bucks) and watch barflies toss a stone bowling ball around a stretch of packed clay. Floyd has a full selection of liquor and bottled beer, including Guinness on tap, and serves up fun with the "45 and a Bullet" special (a shot of whiskey and a can of cheap beer for $6). The patrons are as varied as the entertainment, but lean toward the young and outgoing. Like every bar in the area, the weeknight crowd is generally made up of people affiliated with the courts in one way or another."

FUNgestions

Reader Joe from Brooklyn writes:

"A last-minute suggestion for the Fungenda: my new favorite band PROTONPROTON is playing at Buttermilk Bar at the corner of 5th Ave and 16thSt., Park Slope, Bl'knryn. Their flyer said 9 PM. Dunno about the cover charge. They're a phenomenal group: Brooklyn-based three piece, drums, vocals/toy piano, and gass (a self-built instrument with two bass strings and four guitar strings). www.protonproton.com and all that."

Upcoming Awesome: Legends of the Hidden Temple Version

As many of you may or may not know, the Met, on June 13, is opening an exhibit called "Treasures of the Sacred Maya Kings." This has been in my calendar since December. Be forewarned that I am brainstorming ways of splitting us all into teams an somehow running an obstacle course through the museum. Red Jaguars: What is the most important event of the summer?

Brooklyn, Take Note!

Big FUNgenda thanks goes out to Loreal for her suggestion of the movies under Brooklyn Bridge, and the Roof Top Films (links to the right)! Roof Top looks more obscure, but I know we all love to try new things. Brooklyn Bridge sounds like the ultimate city activity and I can't wait to go. Zara is particularly excited for PeeWee's Big Adventure on July 27th, while I will be going (alone, if necessary) to Bonnie and Clyde on August 10th. You bring the friendship, I'll bring the beer.
